Thank you for entering the Haslemere Bumpy Triathlon which is organised by aat events and sanctioned by the British Triathlon Federation.
Our race sponsors are the Haslemere Festival, Haslemere Sports Association, Gradian, Cycle Works and Sport Haslemere.
The race is based at the Haslemere Leisure Centre, Kings Road, Haslemere, Surrey, GU27 2QT, (formerly Herons Leisure Centre) which is situated to the west of the town and 11 minutes’ walk from Haslemere Railway Station.
Please make sure you leave plenty of time to park, register and rack your bike before your allocated swim start. There will be limited parking at the Leisure Centre for early starters and then parking will be as directed; either at the Wey Centre, St Christopher’s Road, Haslemere, Surrey, GU27 1DL, or street parking; please be considerate when parking and do not block local addresses. Once parked follow the signs to the front of the Leisure Centre.
REGISTRATION: 0600hrs to 0800hrs Sunday 10th June 2018: If you are a BTF member please make sure you have your BTF Licence otherwise you will be required to purchase a Day Membership at £4. Non BTF members have already paid the levy and will be able to download their day membership from the website; you are not required to bring it to registration though.
Register in the Leisure Centre and collect two race numbers, a timing chip, bike and helmet numbers BEFORE racking your bike. You will not be allowed in the transition area until your bike and helmet numbers are attached. ONLY ATHLETES WILL BE PERMITTED IN THE TRANSITION AREA. The swim coordinator will brief you in small groups on the poolside; there is no other briefing so please make sure you are familiar with the course and BTF rules ESPECIALLY THE NO DRAFTING RULE. If you have any other queries please speak to one of the registration team or one of the race organisers.
SWIM: 400 meters (16 lengths). Swimmers will be seeded according to their estimated swim time with the slowest starting first. SWIM START TIMES WILL BE POSTED ON THE WEBSITE A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT. Line up by the side of the pool at the changing room end of the pool until you are called down to the deep end to start by the swim coordinator. The pool is 25m x 8 lanes. You will be swimming diagonally (zig-zag) up and down the lanes starting at Lane 1 and then dipping under the lane rope to do the same in each lane. When you get to the end (Lane 8) you’ll have swam 400m and will be at the pool exit and ready to run into the transition area outside. Please take caution when leaving the pool as the surface will be wet & slippery. You will be swimming with people of a similar ability based on your estimated swim time so please be as accurate as possible. LANE ETIQUETTE: If you’re caught by the person behind you and they touch your feet, you must let them overtake you at the end of that length.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON POOLSIDE AT LEAST 10-15 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR ALLOCATED START TIME and we will endeavour to get you off ASAP. There are two races both covering the same course; the Sprint and Relay Triathlon which start at 7:00am. Relay swimmers will be seeded with swimmers of same ability, be they individual or relay team. Results Base will be providing chip timing - please make sure the chip is attached securely during the swim section.
Approximate start times for the Sprint Triathlon can be seen here. Start times will be emailed to you the week before the event.
400m Swim Time
Less than 6:30 min
TRANSITION (T1): See plans on website. The transition for 2018 will be at the front of the Leisure Centre in the main car park. Athletes will run from the rear of the pool into the transition area. Spectators will be able to see the swim exit, transition and finish from this location and this is also where the trade stands will be situated. Bikes will be racked on the racking provided; DO NOT RACK ON THE FENCE. DO NOT REMOVE YOUR BIKE FROM THE RACKING UNTIL YOUR HELMET IS FASTENED. Helmets must conform to ANSI/British Standards. Do not ride in the transition area; mount your bike in the mount/dismount zone as directed by the official.
RELAY TEAMS: The timing chip is your relay baton. Swimmers need to have it strapped to their ankle, then run into transition and hand it over to your cyclist who’ll be waiting by their bike, cyclists then strap it to their ankle and when they return and rack their bike make sure the chip is handed over to the runner after the bike is racked. The runner then straps it to their ankle – IT MUST BE STRAPPED TO AN ANKLE FOR THE TIMING TO WORK.
SPRINT CYCLE: 20km. Please ride with caution as you leave the Leisure Centre and be prepared to STOP at the junction with Sturt Road. There will be a marshal at this point trying to assist you but they cannot stop the traffic, so it is YOUR responsibility to make sure the road is clear. Once you reach the A286 Midhurst Road you must turn right. FOR SAFETY REASONS YOU MUST STOP & ‘DAB DOWN’ AT THIS JUNCTION; FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION. Once on the A286 head south towards Fernhurst and just prior to the village left (4km); this is a fast downhill section so please take care. This section (4km to 9km) is fast with a number of sharp bends. The road surface has deteriorated in some locations so watch out for pot holes and keep your head up! At the end of the road turn left and start the bumpy section (9km- 18km) until you reach the outskirts of Haslemere; this section is mainly uphill. Follow the signs to Kings Road where you turn left opposite the railway station and enter a traffic calming area, please make sure you give way to oncoming traffic if required to do so. Enter the Leisure Centre and follow the road round to the transition entrance. Please be aware there will be other cyclists and runners emerging from this point as well as ordinary gym users using the Leisure Centre. There will be a motorcyclist and a recovery vehicle on the course. YOU MUST OBEY THE HIGHWAY CODE.
TRANSITION (T2): Once dismounted, rack your bike and ONLY THEN REMOVE YOUR HELMET. Please consider other athletes property in the transition area. Other athletes may be starting their race so please be aware.
SPRINT RUN: 5km. Run out of the transition and down to the junction with Sturt Road where you turn left and then almost immediately right across the road. Please take care crossing the section as there will be traffic and other cyclists. Two marshals will be located at this point. Follow the route onto the trail which soon emerges into New Road and then bear left into School Road. Keep to the pavement and continue until you reach the junction with Camelsdale Road. Caution at this point as you will need to cross the road (marshalled crossing). Run up Marleycombe Road and onto Marley Common where the course becomes off road. Follow the signs within this looped wooded section and eventually you will re-emerge onto the trail you started on. Retrace your route back to the Leisure Centre and finish by the rear entrance of the pool. (PLEASE RUN ON THE FOOTPATHS AND BE AWARE OF OTHER PEDESTRIANS)
The finish area is fairly tight but it’ll create a great atmosphere. Please hand over you timing chip to the timing crew and collect your medal. Water will be provided.
Haslemere Leisure Centre will be providing hot food and drinks inside and there will also be drinks served outside by the main entrance.
